Halloween 2013

Hi everybody!

This year for Halloween, my brother and I went trick-or-treating. It's been our tradition to go out solo while our parents hand out candy, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't look forward to the occasion. My brother went as the grim reaper, and even let me do his eye makeup for an extra frightening effect. I've been indecisive about my costume the entire month, but yesterday I finally decided to go as Minnie Mouse. I had the ears, and the signature red skirt, so I was good to go! We had a really good time, and it's been awesome seeing more and more kids in our neighborhood participate every year.

Also, this is the last day of Blogtober! It's been a great time, and I've thoroughly enjoyed the month. It went by so fast! I'm definitely looking forward to this next year.

I hope you enjoyed!

Bold in Burgundy

Hi everybody!

Today's outfit is something I'd wear out shopping. It's stylish and comfortable to wear, which is the perfect combo! The lovely burgundy skirt is actually a dress, I chose to throw a knotted tee over top of it. I like the dress because it is really silky and single layered, so there isn't too much fabric floating around. The accessories are almost all black, because when in doubt I elect to go dark.

Bad Hair Day

Hi everybody!

Do you ever have one of those days where your hair flat out refuses to cooperate? Usually, I just begrudgingly stick my hair in a ponytail, but today I decided to switch it up and throw on a gray knit beanie. It keeps everything in place, and is really comfortable to wear. I kept the rest of the outfit really casual, since I didn't want the cap to look too out of place on my head. I also added red lipstick, to distract from my hair failure.

DIY Heatless Waves

Hi everybody!

I really enjoy having curls in my hair, I feel like it's a nice change of pace. However, I don't like putting too much heat (or effort, for that matter) onto my hair, as I like to keep it as strong and shiny as possible. Heatless headband curls are the perfect solution for me, because it's easy, effortless, and provides amazing curls.

For this look, you'll need a hair brush, a thin elastic headband, and a few bobby pins. Start out with damp hair and brush out any tangles. If you want, you can add a texturizing spray at this step.

Next, push your fringe area forward and slide the head band on top of your hair. Try to keep your hair as smooth as possible, it helps with both rolling up the hair and taking it out.

Start out with a small section in the front, roll, it and pull it up and over the elastic band. Grab another small section of hair, combine it with your twist, and pull it over the elastic band.

Do this on the side until you reach the back, then start on the opposite side. It helps to use bobby pins to keep the hair in place as you roll and pull through the elastic.

Once you have rolled all the way to the back, take the the last few strands and pin them up in a curl. You can also tuck the little curl into your headband in the back, whichever is easier.

Now that your hair is all in place, hairspray to keep the flyaways down. You can sleep in this overnight, or just wear it for a few hours as your hair dries.

Once you're ready to take out the curls, undo your steps starting in the back. Don't yank on the headband, it'll only create tangles.

Tousle your curls with your fingers, and you're good to go!

5 Tips for Treating Acne

Hi everybody!

I've dealt with skin issues my entire life. Since I was little, I've had eczema on and off. In the past five years, I've also had acne on and off. This past year, my skin went bezerk and got pretty bad in March/ April. Since then, my skin has improved tremendously and I'd like to share the tips and tricks that really helped me.

I took photos when my skin was at its worst, so I could see the improvement as I made changes to my lifestyle. The photos on top are from the end of March, and the ones on the bottom are from today, nearly 7 months later:

1. Change your pillowcase. As you can see from the before pictures, I had a pretty bad breakout on my right cheek, but not on my left. That's because the acne there wasn't hormonal, it was from sleeping on dirty pillowcases. I wash my pillowcases once a week at the latest, and I have two that I can switch through during the week. If you talk frequently on the phone, clean that as well.

2. Consider removing dairy products from your diet. This made the biggest impact on the way my skin and body felt. The idea is that dairy products such as milk contain hormones that interfere with your own body's hormones. This isn't a bad thing when you're younger, as these hormones can often help you grow. But later in life, they can cause problems such as acne (WebMD has more info if you're interested.) Now, I either substitute dairy products or avoid them altogether.

3. Exercise regularly. You don't have to jump into a crazy regimen in order to reap the benefits of exercise, even short workouts help circulate the blood and help your skin. I enjoy running, which gets my heart pumping and the outdoor workouts ensure I get lots of vitamin D to my skin. Exercise also positively affects my mood and sleeping habits, in conjunction with helping my skin.

4. Drink water. This tip ties into the previous one nicely, because I find myself drinking lots of water on days that I exercise. Water helps flush your system and keep your skin hydrated from within. I've also noticed that if I eat food containing dairy products, by drinking lots of water afterwards, I can minimize the breakouts and itchiness that usually follow.

5. Use a moisturizer. The one mistake I see people doing all the time is skipping out on moisturizer. By skipping moisturizer, you're forcing your skin to create more oil in order to keep itself hydrated. I really like Boots Botanics Organic Facial Oil, because the product seeps into the skin quickly and I've never had problems with breakouts from it. The idea of using oil on the face sounds counterproductive for acne, but the oil actually prevents your face from producing its own oil, which is what causes acne. It's one of the best products I've ever used!

My skin is still far from perfect, but it feels and looks much better than it did half a year ago. I've noticed that a lot of the redness and irritation has died down, the texture is smoother, it's generally less oily, and breakouts are less frequent. On days that I choose to wear makeup, I use significantly less product and the overall application is smoother.

Pink Book Sale

Hi everybody!

Today, my family and I attended a book sale for breast cancer awareness hosted by Safe & Sound at the BurJuman shopping center. They had rows and rows of tables filled with donated books, and the profits go towards furthering breast cancer awareness. Other events will also be hosted throughout the month, so if you're in Dubai and would like to attend, here's the link for their Facebook page. It was wonderful seeing so many people out, especially volunteers, and the entire mall decked out in pink. This is something that is very important to me, and I'm glad to have been a small help.

Journal Inspiration

Hey everybody!

I've recently gotten better at keeping journals around for lists and ideas and such. I have to admit, my favorite part of getting a new journal is decorating them! Moleskine journals are perfect for this, because they come in a variety of solid colors, and I really like the how the pages are lined, the spacing is perfect for my small handwriting.

This first journal is covered in Egyptian stamps. At some point when I was in middle school, I really wanted to collect stamps. I'm not sure why I wanted to, but I didn't collect very many. It turns out stamp collecting is easier when you actually send and receive letters. Anyways, when I spotted a stamp booklet in a gift shop in Egypt, I grabbed them immediately and really never had a use for them until now. I currently use this journal (fittingly, I might add) to document my attempts at learning Arabic.

This second journal has an instagram photo of mine pasted onto it. I really liked the idea of cutting up pictures, and interlacing two together. However, I accidentally cut the one shown here vertically, and the other horizontally. Thus, I decided to just use one photo for this journal. I mostly use this journal for various lists and things to remember.

The last journal I made myself from an old H&M bag. The inside is filled with 8.5 x 11 printer paper cut in half. The key to getting the papers to lie flat is to cut half of them with 1 inch slits at the top and bottom, along halfway fold. The other half of your papers should have a giant slit down the middle, beginning and ending 1 inch from their respective borders. You should then be able to slide 1 paper with top and bottom cuts inside 1 paper with the giant lengthwise cut, and stack accordingly. Stapling the papers together also works just fine.

Pearls and Polka Dots

Hey everybody!

Today's outfit is what I'd wear out to brunch, or out shopping with my friends. The gray top is actually a dress that is rather bland on its own. The bright blue polka dotted skirt adds a nice punch of color! I threw on these gorgeous pearls, as well. The flower isn't part of the necklace, it's a hair clip that I though would be a lovely addition to the piece. I also figured out how to curl my hair nicely with a heatless method, so I was having a ball shaking my head about!

Neon Daffodils

Hey everybody!

I have fully embraced springtime and all of the beautiful colors that come along with it! I hit up the mall and picked out some bright pieces. My favorite is the swishy, pleated daffodil colored skirt. It's really flattering worn high waisted, and I added a tied chambray shirt to highlight that feature. I added some fun silver accessories, like cool jingly bangles. To finish off the look, I added my polka dot oxfords.
