September 2012 Birchbox

Hey everybody! Today's post is an unboxing of my September 2012 birchbox. I know it's late, but Birchbox doesn't ship to military addresses, so my lovely grandma sends them over! 

Here's an overview of what I got this month. 

The theme for this box is fall fashion and trends. In fact, Birchbox even included a mini look-book to provide inspiration for this season's trends. 

Here's the handy list included with every box, detailing each item. 

First up, we have the Nexus sample combo. It is a trial size of the Pro-Mend Split End Treatment System, and includes the shampoo, conditioner, and leave in treatment. I really enjoy how it comes with the whole system, because it always irks me when samples say "This product works best with our entire line...". Now I can try out the entire system! 

 Next up we have the Benefit Cosmetics facial wash and exfoliating combo. I've heard great things about the Benefit skincare line and am happy to give this a try! 

The first product on the left is the Youngblood mineral primer. It's to be used on the face prior to foundation or other face products. I have combination skin, so a product to help my makeup stay on all day is a welcome sight. 

The item in the middle is the Color Club nail polish in Status Update. It's a gorgeous mid-toned gray color, perfect for the fall time. I've received a Color Club polish before, and was impressed with the opacity and lasting power. 

The product on the very right is a twist band hair tie. These hair ties are phenomenal, and I have previously purchased a pack of 12, and I'm happy to add another to my collection. 

My lifestyle extra is the Mighty Leaf tea bags in Green Tea Tropical, Vanilla Bean, and Chamomile Citrus. I'm currently sipping on the Chamomile flavor, and I'm in love! It's a perfect night-time unwinding tea, and I enjoy how the bags contain whole leaves and flower, it's not all ground up. I'm excited to try out the other two!

Fishing for Fishtails

Hey everybody! Today's outfit is very casual and comfy. I mixed prints with my polka dot tank top and a tweed-esque cardigan. I also really like how well the bronzy metal in the necklace complements the cardigan. Plus, the fuchsia gem stones add a pop of color. I kept the shoes neutral with some gray slip ons, which also have hints of purple writing. I threw my hair into a messy fishtail, to add to the comfy vibe.

Lace and Polka Dots

Hey everybody! Today's outfit is very girly and feminine. Lace as been a big trend this year, and continues to go strong into fall. I'm obsessed with this shirt, because I adore the flattering fit. I wish I could have bought more colors! Also, the light wash polka dot jeans give a little quirky-cuteness and get bonus points for being comfy! 

"Oh, don't mind me. Just fixing my hair in midair. No big deal."

Owl Love You Forever

Hey everybody! The main attraction of today's post is my adorable owl sweater! I think it's the bees' knees, and I can't get enough of it. I added some ultra neon pink shorts into the mix, along with some tights. Adding tights is an easy way to bring shorts and skirts into the fall time! Then there's the chunky ankle boot, which toughens up the look a little. 

My belly button decided to crash the party. Wee!

Cranberry Open-Knit Sweater

Hey everybody! I'm absolutely in love with this outfit because of the autumnal open knit sweater! It was an absolute steal, and had been marked down from 200AED to 50AED (about $54 to $13.50)! It's cozy, but not too warm since Dubai still gets plenty of sunshine. I had some fun with the sweater's low neckline, and peeped a peter-pan collar out. I also added these adorable Chanel-inspired flats! Overall, I just love the casual and comfy but still put-together vibe.

Vintage Find: Wonder Woman Tee

Hey everybody! Here's another one of my vintage finds from the thrift store Buffalo Exchange. It's this super cool Wonder Woman tee that fits like a glove! I paired dark purple skinnies and pink tennis shoes with the shirt. I also added some gold accented jewelry. 

Channeling Wonder Woman and heading for the sky! :)

Noir French Twist Nail Tutorial

Hey everybody! Today I'm doing a fall nail tutorial for the nails seen here. They're a twist on the classic French manicure, and are great for people (like myself) who have small nail beds. 

To start out, you'll need a base coat to protect your nails, your color scheme polishes of choice, and a top coat to seal in the design. I chose black and gold, because it's very autumnal and they go well together. You'll also need tape, scissors, an index card, and a bobby pin or dotting tool. 

First, apply your base coat. I always use a base coat, especially when I'm using dark colors to prevent the polish from staining or weakening my nails. The one shown here is the Natural Nail Base Coat from OPI. 

Next, apply your base color. I'm using this black shade from an OPI holiday set years ago. It has some cool silver reflects in it, which give the black some dimension. 

Put on two coats if needed, and wait for the polish to dry for about 10 minutes. Since we're working with tape, I don't want the base color to lift off. 

Cut out some strips of tape, and curve the end. Alternatively, you could use French manicure strips, but I never have any. :) Then, apply the accent color to the ends. This lovely gold polish is from Forever 21. 

Unfortunately, this photo really isn't in focus. This step is optional, but you can also choose an accent nail to do polka dots on. I used a bobby pin instead of a dotting tool (because I don't have one of those either! haha!) 

Finally, peel off the tape and apply a top coat to prevent chips. 

Voilá! Your nail design is done!
